"The Hippopotamus's Tusks," is an award-winning book illustration project that captures the heart and soul of a beloved tale. Awarded first place in the prestigious 'Karl Mannheim' Book Illustration contest, this project combines intricate paper-cut techniques with captivating storytelling to create a visual masterpiece. In this project, I utilized the paper-cut technique to craft intricate illustrations on a large format of 50*70 cm. Each illustration was meticulously created to bring to life the whimsical narrative of a hippopotamus struggling with self-acceptance. From the gentle curves of the hippopotamus's figure to the lush landscapes that surround her, every detail was thoughtfully considered to evoke emotion and intrigue.
At the heart of "The Hippopotamus's Tusks" is a poignant story of self-discovery and acceptance. The titular character, a hippopotamus, grapples with feelings of sadness and insecurity over her perceived imperfections. Through her journey, she learns to embrace her uniqueness and find strength in her differences, inspiring readers of all ages to celebrate their own individuality.
After completing the illustrations, I carefully scanned each piece and seamlessly integrated typography to complement the visual narrative. The typography adds depth and context to the story, guiding readers through the hippopotamus's emotional journey with grace and sensitivity.
Originally written in French, "The Hippopotamus's Tusks" is a timeless tale that transcends language barriers. Its universal themes of self-acceptance and resilience resonate with readers around the world, making it a beloved classic for generations to come.
